Workers on fixed-term contracts in Japan have the right to demand a written explanation if their employer decides not to renew their contract. This right applies when either:
– You have worked continuously for over one year
OR
– After your third renewal (at the end of your fourth contract)
For example, if you are on one-year contracts, you can demand a written explanation at the end of your second contract. For those on shorter contracts (like 4-month contracts), you gain this right either when you pass the one-year mark or at the end of your fourth contract, whichever comes first.
This right is guaranteed under Article 14(2) of the Labor Standards Act. Employers must provide these reasons in writing when requested.
If you have questions about contract renewals or need assistance, please contact the General Union.
