Power harassment, often called “pawahara,” refers to behavior where someone in the workplace uses their power in ways that are unreasonable or harmful, creating a hostile or stressful work environment. This can include verbal abuse, intimidation, excessive criticism, or unfair treatment that goes beyond normal workplace management.

Although Japanese law requires employers to prevent and address power harassment, many workers are unsure of their rights or what to do when it happens. This short video explains what power harassment looks like in practice, what you can expect in the workplace, and how to respond.
