Since 2010, the General Union has been running the HOOK (Hands Off Our Koma) Campaign to prevent universities from reducing the number of classes (koma) assigned to our part-time instructor members. This initiative, which marks the beginning of our three-part story, has transformed how we protect job stability in higher education.
Before 2010, members often approached us in December or later with news of koma cuts for the upcoming academic year. Despite some successes, the late timing made effective action challenging. Recognizing this, we adopted a proactive stance.
Now, we engage with universities months in advance. This year, we’ve sent demands to about 50 universities, covering over 50 members’ employment. Our deadline for responses is 11 October, giving us ample time to negotiate if issues arise.
This early action approach has proven highly effective. It allows us to discuss alternatives with universities, such as returning classes or finding mutually satisfactory solutions, well before the new academic year begins.
The HOOK Campaign exemplifies our commitment to proactive action and long-term job security. By addressing potential issues early, we’ve created a more stable work environment for part-time instructors across dozens of universities.
Stay tuned for our next article, where we’ll explore the legal context of the HOOK Campaign and how recent law changes have strengthened our position in protecting our members’ rights, and while you’re waiting please read about the our union’s activity in universities at genu.cc/uni.
