Records for Reimbursements
Ethan* worked at an English conversation school. From time to time, he would buy materials for the school and submit the receipts to his manager. After a few months, he checked his payslip and couldn’t find any reimbursements. He asked the union to review his payslips during a consultation for an unrelated matter and brought up his dissatisfaction of not being reimbursed. It turns out, he was getting his money back all along, but he just didn’t understand where to look. He thought that the amount was lower than it should have been but he didn’t keep any copies of the receipts for himself. Without receipts or records of what he submitted, he decided to drop this issue and focus on a larger problem that had occurred.
Ethan’s tip: I have learned that it’s best to keep a record of receipts if you want to ensure proper reimbursement. You can’t always trust that the company will keep good records for you.
Note: Check with your company about what can be reimbursed and the proper procedure to follow. If you weren’t authorized to make a purchase, you may not be able to claim the money back.
