The General Union invites you to an important seminar on one of Japan’s most significant labour law changes – the right to unlimited term contract conversion.
Since April 2013, Japan’s revised Labour Contract Act has given workers on repeated fixed-term contracts the legal right to convert to unlimited term employment after five years. Yet many workers remain unaware of their rights, while others who’ve tried to convert have faced unexpected challenges.
This 120-minute seminar will cover:
The Legal Framework Understanding the history and development of Article 18 of the Labour Contract Act – how it came to be, what it was meant to achieve, and where we stand today.
University Teaching Positions How the five-year rule has transformed academic employment in Japan, particularly for non-tenured/limited-term faculty. Learn about both opportunities and ongoing challenges in higher education.
The Ten-Year Exception Special provisions extending conversion to ten years for certain workers. Learn how universities abuse this to deny unlimited contracts to part-timers and full-time lecturers who don’t meet the provision’s actual criteria.
Reality Check: Problems and Solutions How do you actually convert? What happens after conversion? We’ll examine common issues workers face when trying to get unlimited term contracts – because getting the conversion is the hard part – plus strategies to overcome employer resistance and protect your rights.
The seminar will examine effective outreach strategies and discuss how to better inform workers about their conversion rights.
Who Should Attend: Anyone on fixed-term contracts, workers attempting conversion, and those supporting colleagues through the process
Don’t let your employer control the narrative around your employment security. Understanding your rights is the first step to exercising them.
