Is Your Residency Status at Risk?

Dec 6, 2025

Public Meeting – Sunday, 7 December 2025 at 14:00 via ZOOM

Open to all. Bring your friends, colleagues, and anyone concerned about these changes. RSVP your attendance at…https://rsvp.genu.cc/my_visa

The Japanese government is pushing through massive changes to immigration law that will affect nearly every foreign resident in Japan. Visa renewal fees could jump from ¥6,000 to ¥40,000. Permanent residents may lose their status for unpaid insurance or pension premiums. The government’s “Zero Illegal Residents Plan” is ramping up deportations, even of families with deep roots here. By June 2027, immigration officers will check your payment records before renewing your visa – and if you’ve fallen behind, you could be refused.

These aren’t distant threats. Some measures are already in force; others take effect in 2026 and 2027. The General Union is organising this meeting to break down what’s actually changing, who’s most at risk, and what we can do collectively to protect ourselves and push back. We’ll also discuss the public comment period on these regulations – your chance to make your voice heard before implementation. Whether you’re on a work visa, permanent residence, or helping a mate navigate the system, this affects you. Let’s figure out together how to organise, prepare, and respond.
