At the General Union, we believe that knowledge is one of the strongest tools workers have. This year, we are launching a series of monthly themes designed to help members better understand their rights, navigate workplace challenges, and prepare for important life and career events.

June: Rainy Day Reads – Workplace Documents

As Japan enters the rainy season, we’re kicking off our theme months with Rainy Day Reads: Workplace Documents.

Many workers receive employment documents, contracts, and payslips without fully understanding what they mean. Yet these documents contain important information about pay, benefits, working conditions, and legal rights.

Throughout June, we’ll help members learn:

• How to read and understand employment contracts
• What should (and shouldn’t) appear in a contract
• How to read a Japanese payslip
• Understanding deductions such as tax, pension, health insurance, and employment insurance
• Spotting errors or discrepancies in workplace documents
• Knowing your rights when contract terms change

Understanding these documents can help workers protect themselves and make informed decisions about their employment.

Looking Ahead: Our Monthly Themes

July – The Heat is ON: Power Harassment

Summer temperatures aren’t the only thing heating up. July focuses on workplace power harassment, helping workers understand what constitutes harassment, how to respond, and what protections are available.

August – Work Stability and Clarity

This month examines issues that affect working conditions and scheduling, including Unlimited-Term Contracts (UTCs) and Variable Working Hours, helping workers better understand employment stability and work-hour systems.

September – Respect for the Aged

As Japan observes Respect for the Aged Day, we’ll focus on planning for the future through workshops and resources on Pensions and Retirement.

October – Maternity and Child-Raising Leave

October’s theme explores the rights and protections available to workers who are starting or growing their families. We’ll discuss maternity leave, parental leave, and child-raising leave systems available in Japan.

November – Labour Thanksgiving Month

In celebration of Labour Thanksgiving Day, we’ll dedicate November to worker representation and collective action. Topics will include:

• Labour Union Rights
• Workers’ Representatives and Elections
• Working Regulations
• The Annual Labour Symposium

December – A Month of Leave

As the year comes to a close, we’ll focus on leave entitlements and time away from work, including Health Care and Medical Leave, helping workers understand the leave options available when life doesn’t go according to plan.

January – Insurance for the New Year

Start the year informed with a closer look at the insurance systems that protect workers. Topics will include:

• Workers’ Compensation Insurance
• Employment Insurance
• Understanding your rights and benefits when things go wrong

February – Discipline, Dismissal and Departures

February tackles some of the most challenging workplace issues. We’ll cover:

• Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs)
• IT Workers’ Rights
• The dos and don’ts of ending employment
• Understanding disciplinary procedures and dismissals

March – Women in the Workforce

March’s theme will highlight the experiences, challenges, and achievements of women in the workplace, while examining workplace equality and rights.

April – Shunto Month: Wages and the Workforce

Spring in Japan is synonymous with Shunto (the Spring Wage Offensive), when unions across the country negotiate for better wages and working conditions. Throughout April, we’ll explore how wages are determined, what factors influence pay increases, and the role collective bargaining plays in improving workers’ lives. 

May – Freelance

As freelance and contract work become increasingly common, April will focus on understanding freelance work and answering an important question: “Are you really a freelancer?” We’ll explore worker classification, rights, and protections for freelancers and independent contractors.
