On 14 February, under warm sunshine hinting at the arrival of spring, we held another street labour consultation in Ropponmatsu, Fukuoka City—our second this year.
Even if we can only set up for a short time with just a few volunteers, we are committed to keeping these consultations going. Alongside our labour consultation volunteers, we’ll be out in the streets throughout 2025, providing advice and distributing leaflets.
Connecting with Workers One-on-One
At our January session, a man approached us asking, “Can I get help with unpaid wages?” He hadn’t been paid since October. After a detailed consultation at our office, a union member accompanied him to the Labour Standards Inspection Office, where he filed an official complaint. His case is still ongoing.
At our latest session, a woman stopped to ask, “Do you help freelancers too?” She had just come from Houterasu (the Japan Legal Support Centre), where she was referred after seeking advice at the Labour Standards Inspection Office. She told us, “Hiring a lawyer costs money. I want to quit this company, but I don’t know how.” We’ve set up a consultation to go through her situation in detail.
Expanding Our Reach
As part of a new initiative, we’ve started leaving General Union leaflets at various offices and community spaces—starting with Palestine House, a shop specializing in Palestinian goods. Moving forward, we plan to expand this network, placing materials in the shops and offices of friends and allies to make sure more people know where to turn for help.
