Everyone likes it when there is extra money showing up on their payslip. But what happens when it doesn’t appear like you think it should? Here are a few things brought to our attention by members.

Did you miss me in August?

Jessica* works as a dispatch employee at a private high school along with another ALT from the same company. During summer, Jessica stays in Japan and is expected to work through the summer daily on a special project. However, her coworker doesn’t work during August and returns to her home country. In her first September at the school, Jessica looked at her payslip for August and noticed her transportation wasn’t covered even though she worked daily. She contacted her company to see why she wasn’t reimbursed for her August transportation and what could be done. She was advised to send in her attendance sheet and it was determined that the transportation allowance was warranted. She was paid for it the following month along with her usual September transportation.

Jessica’s note: I was lucky that my company and I were on good terms, so it was easy to bring it up to them. However, had I not been reimbursed, I know the union would have stepped in on my behalf.
