HOOK: Hands Off Our Koma – Part 3: Strengthening Our Stand in 2024-25

10月 9, 2024 ,

In Part I and Part II of our series, we explored the origins of the HOOK Campaign and the legal framework supporting it. Now, let’s focus on our current efforts and future plans.

The General Union’s HOOK Campaign continues to be a crucial tool in protecting part-time instructors’ job security. This year, we’re engaging with about 50 universities, representing over 50 members’ employment situations.

Our deadline for university responses is 11 October. This early action gives us time to negotiate effectively if any issues arise, maintaining the campaign’s high success rate.

The campaign’s importance has only grown since the 2018 labour law changes discussed in our previous article. These changes have strengthened individual workers’ rights, adding legal weight to our long-standing position that universities should not arbitrarily reduce employees’ workload.

Looking ahead, we’re prepared to take our interpretation of the law to court if necessary. While we haven’t had to do this yet, we stand ready to defend our members’ rights at all levels.

We call on all our members to stay informed and engaged with the HOOK Campaign. Your support and solidarity are crucial in maintaining its effectiveness. Together, we can ensure that university part-time instructors receive the job security and respect they deserve.

The success of the HOOK Campaign demonstrates the power of collective action and strategic planning. As we face the challenges of the 2024-2025 academic year and beyond, we remain committed to protecting our members’ rights and improving working conditions in higher education.

Remember, your voice, your rights, and your future are worth fighting for. Join us in making a difference.

This concludes our three-part series on the HOOK Campaign. We hope it has provided valuable insights into our ongoing efforts to safeguard the jobs of part-time instructors in universities across Japan.
