全国セミナー / National Seminar

Jun 3, 2019

全国一般全国協議会傘下で教育関係労働者を組織している労働組合は、語学学校、塾や大学で教えあるいは働いておられる全ての皆さんがこのセミナーに参加し自らの権利について学ばれることを歓迎します。

Unions affiliated with the National Union of General Workers which are involved in organising educational workers welcome all those teaching or working at a language school, cram school, university, college, and ANYONE else to attend our seminars to learn about your rights.

The meetings will be held in both Japanese and English and we hope that this format will contribute to more cooperation amongst Japanese and foreign workers involved in this industry. You can find some links to the seminar topics below and we hope to see you there. Entrance is free, but we do ask that you RSVP if you plan on attending.

TOPICSテーマ(日本語)

Employment Standards

What standards are set by law and are requirements for your employer to follow?

Paid Holidays: part-time or full time you are allowed a certain number of days off which you should be able to use at your own discretion.

Set working hours, days, location: Your contract cannot be open ended allowing your employer to unilaterally change days and times.

Overtime pay: Working over 40 hours per week? Your employer needs a special agreement to force you to work over 40 hours, and must pay you for all time worked over those 40 hours at a rate of 125%.

Pay for all work: Part-timers especially are regularly faced with this problem as they’re not usually paid for time between, before, or after lessons. A lot of work therefore goes unpaid.

Social Insurance

How many hours per week do you work? How many days per week? Off without pay for many months? All these things help determine your eligibility for all types of social insurance from health to pension to unemployment insurance.

Health and Pension Insurance: Basically all those who work 20 plus hours (in one job) can be enrolled. With company’s over 500 employees it’s mandatory and with less, it’s possible to be enrolled.

Unemployment Insurance: Again, 20 hours (regardless of company size) equals mandatory enrollment.

But let’s make sure that no one is left uninsured. We can share strategies to increase enrollment through negotiations.

Unlimited Term Contracts

Did you know that if you’ve worked over five years at one employer you can get an unlimited term contract?

Less than 40% of people across Japan know that they are eligible for this and employer’s are not making any great effort to promote this right.

Come and hear our experience in dealing with employers unwilling to extend this right to their employees. Universities are being particularly recalcitrant claiming that ALL university instructors are eligible until ten years.

We’ve negotiated with both the Ministry of Labour and Education over this important right and we have the facts.

Make sure you take advantage of this new right and get rid of your one year contract.

Your Right to a Union

Both the Constitution of Japan and the Trade Union Law give you a clear right to join a union, negotiate with your employer, and engage in proper disputes as a union.

We know many have a deep interested in improving their working conditions but are unsure of their rights and may even fear retribution from their employer.

In this seminar we discuss how you can go about getting a union together in your workplace, how collective bargaining works, and what can be done if your employer refuses to recognise the union and negotiate in good faith.

We hope to give you the right information so that you can make a decision based on knowledge as opposed to fear.
