The union in smaller workplaces

Jun 25, 2008

A union member was doing some part-time work at a small cafe but after just a month knew this wasn’t a company that followed labor standards law and decided to quit. The company reacted by refusing to pay her salary. When consulting with the member we discovered that the hourly rate of pay was below the legal minimum wage – a great bargaining chip in negotiations with the company. What could have been a long drawn out affair turned into a short series of phone calls, and the member got their unpaid wages within two weeks.
