The boss refused. The union then sent formal demands, and the boss immediately called asking to meet the union chair. It turned out he had been a union member himself many years before and received help, and so agreed to the union’s demand because of his respect for the union and its activities. Lack of documentary evidence would probably have made this issue a non-starter in summary court or the Labour Standards Office, but luckily for our member, there was another way.
